Sediment
The starting point for this painting was a landscape. I did not, however, want to reproduce it or preserve it in a recognisable form.
As the work developed, successive layers of acrylic and impasto began to cover the original image, breaking apart its space and transforming it into a structure of incisions, vertical rhythms, concentrations and traces. What remains of the landscape are directions, divisions of space and the tension between the vertical rhythm in the upper part of the painting and the diagonal movement below.
I reduced the palette to greys, earthy tones, broken whites and traces of earlier colours. The matter does not form a uniform surface — in places it reveals what remained beneath successive layers of the painting.
“Sediment” is what remains of a landscape once it ceases to be a representation.
It is no longer about a specific place. The landscape remains as a memory of direction, rhythm and space — embedded in matter.
