Sumac Flowers

“Sumac Flowers” is a painting in which the plant motif is not presented literally. It emerges from the material itself.

Deep impasto builds a surface that is almost relief-like. Vertical passages, recesses, and accumulations of paint create a structure from which organic forms begin to appear. The plant is not defined here by contour — its presence arises from rhythm, colour, and the physical construction of the surface.

Cool blues and turquoises interweave with ochres, browns, and broken light tones. Colour passes through the structure, catches on its edges, and disappears into its recesses, which is why the painting changes with the light.

Sumac was the point of departure, not the goal of representation. What interested me was its organic construction — the rhythm of its shoots, its density, and the way the form expands and grows.

Form grows out of matter.
