Interpenetration

Painting sold — as part of a diptych together with “Hands of God”. Sale price of the complete diptych: PLN 10,000 gross. The diptych is now held in a private collection.

This painting did not begin with a subject, a sketch or a predetermined composition.

At first there were only the canvas, the paint and the act of painting.

The first layers developed spontaneously, without any attempt to predict the final result. Colours, abrasions and traces appeared one after another, and at that stage I did not try to subordinate them to any recognisable order.

Only when the painting began to reveal its own structure did the way I worked start to change. The spontaneous record gradually gave way to control, selection and the organisation of what had already appeared. I did not construct the composition from the beginning according to a plan — I responded instead to the relationships emerging between successive layers.

Turquoises and cool blues interpenetrate with greys, graphite and traces of red. Some areas are almost completely covered, while others re-emerge from beneath later layers. In places, the weave of the linen canvas becomes visible; elsewhere, the paint forms a rough, almost mineral surface.

At a certain point I stopped directing the painting towards a previously chosen destination. What was already present on the canvas began to determine the decisions that followed.

This is where the title “Interpenetration” comes from.

What interpenetrates here is not only colour and layers. Two ways of painting also pass into one another — spontaneous gesture and later control, chance and decision, what is revealed and what almost completely disappears beneath the surface.

Not everything that took part in the making of the painting remains visible.

But everything remains within its matter.
