The starting point for this painting was parsley flowers. I was not interested in depicting them literally, but in the rhythm of their growth, branching structures and subtle tensions within the plant.
Through successive layers of paint, the natural motif was simplified and transformed until what remained was primarily a trace, a direction and an internal pulse within the composition.
“Herbarium 1” moves between landscape, an organic record and abstraction. The relief surface is as important as colour in shaping the work. Greys, broken whites and muted touches of pink create a quiet field in which the plant-like impulse does not disappear, but remains embedded in matter.
This is not a botanical illustration. It is an image of remembered form — nature translated into painterly structure.
