Full description:
The starting point for this painting was the sign known as “Hands of God”, associated with Slavic symbolism. I did not want to reproduce it as a clearly legible emblem or build the painting around an illustration of the symbol.
Its geometry became the structure on which I began to build the surface. Successive layers of acrylic and impasto partially cover the sign, reveal it in places, cut through it and blur it. It remains present, but does not dominate the painting.
Beneath the greys, earthy tones and heavy material surface, ochres, yellows and traces of earlier layers emerge. Incisions and depressions run across the surface like remnants of something older than the final layer of paint.
The sign is not represented here. It has been introduced into the material of the painting and left within it as a trace.
I was not interested in making it literally legible. What mattered more to me was the presence of a structure that may be recognised, but may just as easily remain hidden.
The trace of God remains in matter.
