The starting point for “Afterimage of Light” was a landscape painted directly from nature on my property in Kamienica — a place from which my family roots originate.
For the genesis of the painting, the place itself is more important than the view. I did not attempt to reproduce the landscape literally. As the painting developed, its recognisable elements gradually lost their definition, becoming a structure of vertical rhythms, openings, layers and organically accumulating matter.
Muted greys, ochres, cool blues, turquoise and subtle pinks retain a trace of the observed light, but no longer construct a conventional representation. The impasto relief holds colour within the recesses and edges of the surface, allowing the painting to change with the direction of light.
The landscape therefore remains present, though not as a record of a specific view. It remains as a memory of place, light and matter — a place to which I am connected through my family roots and from which part of my own history also emerges.
